השליח בטלהאסי מגיב: "אל תחזירו אותנו לימים אפלים"
"מה שמאפיין יותר מכל את התקופה שקודמת לעונת החגים – היא ציפייה נרגשת ושמחה" כתב הרב אוירכמן למערכת ה"טלהאסי דמוקרט".
"לתדהמתי, החליטו גורמים שונים להעיב על התחושה החגיגית, שהיא נחלת הציבור כולו – באמצעות סכסוך וגרימת מחלוקת.
"מאמרו של רוברט ריווס מה-11 לאוקטובר, כמו גם מאמר מערכת נוסף שפורסם אצלכם ב-08 לאוקטובר, מנסים לנפץ ולסכל יוזמה נפלאה, שיכולה להפוך לגורם מלכד ומאחד.
"תנועת חב"ד ליובאוויטש יזמה הצבת מנורה גדולה בחזית בית המשפט המחוזי בלאון, לא הרחק מהמקום שבו, להבדיל, מוצב גם עץ אשוח.
"העמדה המתנגדת ליוזמתנו – עלולה להחזיר את טלהאסי לימים קדומים, לתפיסת עולם מעוותת שאין לה מקום בעולם המודרני. כבר לפני 15 שנים פסק בית המשפט העליון של ארה"ב שאין כל בעיה משפטית בהצבת חנוכייה בשטחי ציבור וברשות הרבים, ומותר לקבוצות יהודיות לעשות זאת.
"פסיקה זו, ככל הנראה, נעלמה במפתיע מתודעתם של הגורמים האולטרא-ליברליים, יפי הנפש שפועלים למניעת הזכות הלגיטימית של הקהילה היהודית להציב מנורה חגיגית בחזית בית המשפט המחוזי בלאון. התנכרות בוטה זו לזכויותינו, היא הפרה ברורה ועיוות של החוק.
"בחזית הבית הלבן בוושינגטון, מוצבת מידי שנה חנוכיית-ענק. אפילו בול של רשות הדואר, הונפק עם עיטור גדול של 'מנורה' צבעונית. רק כאן בטלהאסי, מתעקשת קבוצה זו לכפות את התנגדותה הבלתי-מוסברת, למנוע את שמחת החג מהקהילה היהודית, ולהכריח אותנו להסתיר את מורשתנו, זהותנו והערכים החשובים לנו.
"הבה נעצור את המגמה. בואו לא נחזיר את השעון אחורה, לאותם ימים אפלים שבהם אינטרסנטים כוחניים כפו את דעותיהם על אחרים. יותר מכל, מסמלת המנורה את חופש הדת לכל אדם. "קיומם של ערכים אלו, רק יוסיפו אור וחמימות רבה לציבור כולו".
It seems that Tallahassee is living in a time warp. Close to 15 years ago the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Jewish groups can place a menorah on public property. In Allegheny County vs. Greater Pittsburgh ACLU, the court ruled unequivocally in favor of the right of freedom of expression for religious groups.
Apparently, that news didn't reach the local ACLU and other ultra-liberal groups here, which have campaigned to deny the Jewish community the right to place a menorah at the Leon County Courthouse.
Denying that right to the local community is a clear breach of the law. The National Menorah is lit every year at the White House. A colorful menorah even appears on a U.S. postage stamp. Yet the ACLU here has threatened to use litigation to scare the other side into submission.
Regardless of the County Commission's vote, it is clearly unconstitutional for it to deny the right of the Jewish community to proudly express its identity and heritage. Let's not turn back the clock to those days when powerful interests bullied others to do their bidding. The menorah represents freedom of religious expression for all. It will add warmth and light to our community.

As we approach the holiday season, we should all experience the feelings of anticipation, excitement and gladness. Unfortunately, such feelings have been marred by divisiveness and discord. The Oct. 8 Democrat editorial as well as Robert Rivas' Oct. 11 My View from the ACLU have cast dispersions upon what could be a beautiful and unifying event. Chabad Lubavitch has proposed to erect a menorah next to a Christmas tree in front of the Leon County Courthouse.
