כשעצר לבדוק את העניין, פגש את הת' לוי שטיין (16) שהבהיר לו במה מדובר. "למעשה" ציין לייטנר בפתח כתבה ארוכה שהכין בעקבות המפגש המוזר, "זו דרך מקורית שמצאו כמה בני נוער להפיץ מסר על חג יהודי שנקרא בשם סוכות". בכתבתו, מתאר העיתונאי את הפעילות הענפה שהספיקו הצעירים, "מתנועה יהודית קטנה אך נמרצת שעונה לשם ליובאוויטש", לבצע מתוך הסוכה הניידת, "כמוה מקימים צעירים דומים במקומות שונים בעולם. אם יהודים מתעניינים, אנו מציעים להם לבקר בסוכה ולקיים את המנהגים המסורתיים הקשורים אליה. וכשההתעניינות היא מצד לא יהודים, אנו מסבירים כמיטב יכולתנו על המסורת שקשורה לחג סוכות".

"ביום רביעי אחר הצהריים" מסכם לייטנר, "החלו לוי וחבריו במלאכת פירוק הסוכה – אותה הם מבטיחים לשוב ולבנות מחדש בשנה הבאה. רגע לפני שהספיקו לעשות זאת, התאספו במקום כמה סקרנים, ביניהם אסתר ליקסון בת 67, שקראה בהתלהבות: האין זה יוצא מן הכלל? אלו אנשים נפלאים!".





 

Traveling sukkah helps Jews celebrate

To some, it might look like an ice-fishing shanty on a trailer.

But it's actually an Oak Park teen's way of spreading the faith about a Jewish holiday known as Sukkoth.

At the suggestion of a rabbi, Levi Stein, 16, built a 12-by-6-foot hut -- called a sukkah -- atop a rented UHaul trailer. For the past week, he and his friends have been driving it around, enticing other Jews to observe the holiday by stepping inside for brief rituals, much the way observant Jews across metro Detroit have done in their own family's makeshift huts.

On Sunday, the friends were at a shopping center in Toledo, where "we got lots of people," Stein said with a wide grin. By Monday, the sukkah-mobile -- a rabbi's term for the portable outreach program -- had rolled into Ann Arbor, where "we had hundreds and hundreds of students coming up to us."

On Tuesday, the group arrived in West Bloomfield and visited the Jewish Community Center, shopping centers and schools.

"Some people say, 'I'm not Jewish but what are you doing?' So we speak to them and we explain everything," said Stein, who belongs to a small but vigorous ultra-orthodox worldwide movement of Jews called Lubavitchers.

The sight of a sukkah is nothing new in metro Detroit. Countless Jews build the temporary shelters in their backyards this time of year, to commemorate the temporary shelters Jews used during their wandering in the wilderness 3,500 years ago, following their escape from Egypt, said Rabbi Shea Werner, at Congregation Bais Chabad Torah Center of North Oak Park. Jews typically share special meals inside the huts during the holiday, he said.

A traveling sukkah is a bit rarer. Yet, each year, Werner's congregation and other Lubavitchers around the world drive the structures around, he said.

Sukkoth was observed by many Jews last Thursday and Friday, but others continue celebrating through today.

After Stein showed off his sukkah for a few more hours Wednesday morning -- at a service for his infant nephew's circumcision at Congregation Bais Chabad Torah Center -- he and a couple of friends spent the afternoon disassembling the structure for use next year.

But before they did, admirers attending the service stopped by, including Esther Icikson, 67, of West Bloomfield.

"Isn't it beautiful?" she said, and nodding at Stein, added, "He's a terrific young man."
