The tough economic times were evident at Keren Simchas Chosson V’Kallah’s Cake bakeoff and ice cream social Monday evening at Oholei Torah in Crown Heights.
Hundreds attended the annual event at Oholei Torah in Crown Heights for KSCVK, an organization that funds weddings for those in need, where elaborate, fondant encrusted cakes, skillfully decorated by local women were auctioned off.
The prices were definitely lower than in previous years, although two cakes in the shape of a laptop and desktop computer, both showcasing beloved community website .com, sold for $800 and $400 respectively.
The evening’s MC Brachi Friedman auctioned the cakes, with the highest price of $1,100 paid for an elaborate Shabbos table cake, complete with challa, siddur and candlesticks.
Dozens of cakes were sold by silent bidding auctions.
Another main attraction at the event was renowned cookbook author Jamie Geller, who told about transforming her life from non-religious TV producer to Orthodox author, and shared recipes and techniques from her best-selling cookbook.
